फ्रेंच consulat से, जो लैटिन consulatus (अर्थ: ‘वाणिज्य-दूत का पद/कार्यकाल’) से आया है; यह लैटिन consul (‘वाणिज्य-दूत/कौंसल’) से संबंधित है।
Definition
A consulate is a diplomatic mission (usually in a foreign city) headed by a consul, providing services such as issuing visas, helping citizens abroad, notarizing documents, and promoting trade and cultural ties; it is generally smaller and less political than an embassy.
वाणिज्य-दूतावास किसी विदेशी शहर में स्थित एक राजनयिक कार्यालय/मिशन होता है जिसका नेतृत्व वाणिज्य-दूत (consul) करता है; यह वीज़ा जारी करने, विदेश में अपने नागरिकों की सहायता करने, दस्तावेज़ों का प्रमाणीकरण/नोटरीकरण करने तथा व्यापार और सांस्कृतिक संबंध बढ़ाने जैसी सेवाएँ देता है; यह सामान्यतः दूतावास (embassy) से छोटा और कम राजनीतिक होता है।
