यह शब्द फ़्रेंच complicité से आया है, जो लेटिन complicitas से संबंधित है; लैटिन complex/complicare का अर्थ 'एक साथ मोड़ना/गूँथना' है। बाद में अर्थ विकसित होकर किसी के गलत काम में 'गुँथे/जुड़े' होने (मिलीभगत) के भाव में इस्तेमाल होने लगा।
