From Old French compas ("circle, circuit; measuring instrument"), from Latin com- ("together") + passus ("step"); later used for the navigational instrument.

A compass is an instrument used for finding directions, typically by a magnetic needle that aligns with Earth’s magnetic field; the word can also mean the range/extent of something (e.g., within the compass of this book) or a tool for drawing circles.
