Origin & History
From Middle English clue/clew meaning ‘a ball of thread’; later used for ‘a guide’ (as in the thread that guides through a maze), and then for ‘hint’ or ‘evidence’.
मध्य अंग्रेज़ी clue/clew से, जिसका अर्थ ‘धागे की गेंद’ था; बाद में ‘मार्गदर्शक’ के अर्थ में (जैसे भूलभुलैया में रास्ता दिखाने वाला धागा) और फिर ‘संकेत/सुराग’ या ‘सबूत’ के अर्थ में प्रयोग होने लगा।
