From classical + -ist; influenced by French classiciste, ultimately from Latin classicus (“of the highest class”) and Greek/Latin “classical” tradition.

A classicist is someone devoted to classical antiquity—typically the languages, literature, history, and art of ancient Greece and Rome—or someone who favors classical styles and standards in art and culture.
