Origin & History
From chip (small piece of wood) + board; the term came into common use in the 20th century with the rise of engineered wood products (often used interchangeably with particleboard).

Chipboard is an engineered wood product made by compressing small wood chips or particles with a binder (often resin) into flat sheets; it is widely used in low-cost furniture, cabinets, flooring underlayment, and packaging.
