From case (outer layer/surface) + hardened; originally used in metallurgy for processes that harden the surface of steel while leaving the interior tougher, later extended figuratively to people.
case (बाहरी परत/सतह) + hardened (कठोर किया हुआ) से बना; मूलतः धातुकर्म में स्टील की सतह को कठोर और भीतर को अपेक्षाकृत मजबूत रखने वाली प्रक्रियाओं के लिए प्रयुक्त, बाद में रूपक रूप में व्यक्तियों पर भी लागू हुआ।
Definition
Case-hardened describes metal or steel that has been treated so the outer layer becomes very hard and wear-resistant while the core stays relatively tough; it can also describe a person made tough, wary, or insensitive by long experience.
केस-हार्डन्ड उस धातु/स्टील को कहते हैं जिसे इस तरह उपचारित किया गया हो कि उसकी बाहरी परत बहुत कठोर और घिसाव-रोधी बन जाए जबकि अंदरूनी भाग अपेक्षाकृत मजबूत/लचीला रहे; रूपक रूप में यह ऐसे व्यक्ति के लिए भी आता है जो लंबे अनुभव से कठोर, सतर्क या भावनात्मक रूप से कम संवेदनशील हो गया हो।
