यह शब्द ‘capital’ (पूँजी/निवेश हेतु संपत्ति) + ‘-ist’ (किसी विचार/पद्धति का समर्थक या पालन करने वाला) से बना है; 19वीं शताब्दी की राजनीतिक अर्थशास्त्र की भाषा में व्यापक रूप से प्रचलित हुआ।
Definition
A capitalist is (1) someone who supports capitalism—an economic system where private individuals or companies own property and businesses for profit; and/or (2) a wealthy person who has a large amount of capital to invest.
