From Latin Canōpus, from Greek Kánōbos (Κάνωβος), the name of Menelaus’s pilot; later applied to the bright star.

Definition
Canopus is one of the brightest stars in the night sky, located in the constellation Carina in the southern hemisphere; it has also been used historically for navigation, and its name is also borne by a figure in Greek myth (Menelaus’s helmsman).
