From English candle + fish; the name refers to the traditional practice of drying the very oily fish and using it as a makeshift candle.

Definition
Candlefish is a small, very oily smelt-like fish native to the Pacific coast of North America; because it contains so much oil, dried candlefish can be lit and will burn like a candle, and it has also been used for making fish oil.
