From French calorie, coined in the 19th century from Latin calor (“heat”), from calere (“to be warm”).

Definition
A calorie is a unit of energy. In science, it is the energy required to raise 1 gram of water by 1°C; in nutrition, “Calorie” (capital C) usually means a kilocalorie (kcal), the energy needed to raise 1 kilogram of water by 1°C.
