यह broom + rape से बना है, जहाँ पुराने अर्थ में rape का मतलब ‘पौधा’ था; नाम उन पौधों के लिए प्रचलित हुआ जिन्हें झाड़ू-झाड़ी (broom) पर परजीवी माना जाता था; आधुनिक वनस्पति-विज्ञान में यह Orobanche आदि वंशों के लिए प्रयुक्त होता है।
