Probably from early 20th-century English, imitative of the sound made by flicking or tapping an inflated fabric bag; later used for non-rigid airships.

Blimps are large, non-rigid, gas-filled airships whose shape is maintained by internal pressure; they are often used for advertising, aerial filming, and surveillance.
