यह 'blemish' क्रिया (दाग लगाना/खराब करना) से बना विशेषण है; मध्य अंग्रेज़ी के माध्यम से, मूलतः पुरानी फ़्रेंच के ऐसे रूपों से जुड़ा है जिनका अर्थ 'पीला करना/निशान लगाना' था और बाद में 'बिगाड़ना/दागदार करना' के अर्थ में विकसित हुआ।
