Origin & History
From Middle English and Middle French (related to forms like belayer), probably from a Germanic root meaning “to lie in wait/hold fast”; the nautical sense developed for securing ropes, and the command sense (“stop!”) followed.
यह शब्द मध्य अंग्रेज़ी और मध्य फ़्रेंच (belayer जैसे रूपों) से आया माना जाता है; संभवतः किसी जर्मैनिक मूल से जुड़ा है जिसका अर्थ “घात में रहना/मजबूती से थामना” था। बाद में नौकायन में रस्सी को सुरक्षित बाँधने के अर्थ में विकसित हुआ और वहीं से आदेशात्मक अर्थ (“रुको/रद्द करो”) प्रचलित हुआ।
Definition
In sailing and climbing, to belay means to fasten and control a rope by wrapping it around a cleat or belaying pin for safety; in general use (often in commands), it means to stop, hold off, or cancel an action or order.
नौकायन और पर्वतारोहण में belay का अर्थ रस्सी को क्लिट/बिलेयिंग पिन के चारों ओर लपेटकर उसे सुरक्षित बाँधना और नियंत्रित करना होता है; सामान्य प्रयोग में (विशेषकर आदेशों में) इसका अर्थ किसी कार्रवाई या आदेश को रोकना, टालना या रद्द करना होता है।
