Origin & History
Named after Émile Baudot (1845–1903), French inventor of the Baudot code used in telegraphy; the unit name came into use in the 20th century.

Definition
In telecommunications, baud measures the rate of symbol transmission: 1 baud = 1 symbol per second; bits per second may be higher than baud if each symbol encodes multiple bits.
