From backpedal (to pedal backward), originally a literal cycling term; later extended figuratively to mean retreating from a position or statement.
यह शब्द backpedal (पीछे की ओर पैडल करना) से आया है; शुरू में यह साइकिल चलाने का शाब्दिक शब्द था, बाद में रूपक रूप में किसी रुख/कथन से पीछे हटने के अर्थ में प्रयोग होने लगा।

Backpedalling is when someone withdraws from what they said or promised earlier, often to avoid blame, conflict, or negative consequences; it can also literally mean pedalling a bicycle backward.
बैकपेडलिंग वह स्थिति है जब कोई व्यक्ति पहले कही या वादा की गई बात से पीछे हट जाता है, अक्सर दोष, टकराव या नकारात्मक परिणामों से बचने के लिए; शाब्दिक रूप से इसका अर्थ साइकिल को पीछे की ओर पैडल करना भी होता है।
