From German Automat, from autom(at)- ‘automatic device’ (ultimately from Greek autos ‘self’) + -mat (as in automaton). Popularized in English in the early 20th century for coin-operated restaurants.

An automat is a type of restaurant where customers serve themselves by inserting coins (or paying) to open glass-fronted compartments that contain prepared food; the term is especially associated with early- to mid-20th-century U.S. and European dining.
