From New Latin astigmatismus, formed from Greek a- ‘not’ + stigma ‘point, mark’, referring to lack of a single focal point.

Definition
Astigmatism is a common refractive error where the cornea or lens is not evenly curved, so light rays focus at more than one point instead of a single point on the retina, causing blurred or distorted vision (often worse for lines in one direction), eye strain, or headaches; it is typically corrected with glasses, contact lenses, or refractive surgery.
एस्टिग्मैटिज़्म (दृष्टिवैषम्य) एक सामान्य अपवर्तन-दोष है जिसमें कॉर्निया या लेंस की वक्रता समान नहीं होती, इसलिए प्रकाश किरणें रेटिना पर एक ही बिंदु पर फोकस होने के बजाय एक से अधिक बिंदुओं पर फोकस करती हैं; परिणामस्वरूप दृष्टि धुंधली/विकृत हो सकती है (कभी-कभी किसी एक दिशा की रेखाएँ अधिक बिगड़ी दिखती हैं), आँखों में थकान या सिरदर्द हो सकता है; इसे प्रायः चश्मे, कॉन्टैक्ट लेंस या रिफ्रैक्टिव सर्जरी से सुधारा जाता है।
