यूनानी शब्द asbest(os) (अर्थ: “अबुझ/अदम्य, न बुझने वाला”) से, लैटिन के माध्यम से; मूलतः यह नाम खनिज की आग के प्रति प्रतिरोधक क्षमता को दर्शाता है।
Definition
Asbestos is a group of heat-resistant, fibrous minerals once widely used in building materials (insulation, roofing, cement, brake pads). When asbestos fibers are released into the air and inhaled, they can lodge in the lungs and cause serious diseases such as asbestosis, lung cancer, and mesothelioma; therefore its use is heavily restricted or banned in many countries.
एस्बेस्टस (अभ्रक) गर्मी-रोधी, रेशेदार खनिजों का एक समूह है, जिसका पहले इन्सुलेशन, छत, सीमेंट और ब्रेक पैड जैसे निर्माण-सामग्री में व्यापक उपयोग होता था। इसके सूक्ष्म रेशे हवा में फैलकर सांस के साथ फेफड़ों में जमा हो सकते हैं और एस्बेस्टोसिस, फेफड़ों का कैंसर तथा मेसोथेलियोमा जैसी गंभीर बीमारियाँ पैदा कर सकते हैं; इसलिए कई देशों में इसके उपयोग पर कड़े प्रतिबंध या प्रतिबंध (बैन) हैं।
