Definition
Appendicitis is an acute or sometimes chronic inflammation of the appendix (a small tube attached to the large intestine), usually causing pain that often starts near the navel and moves to the lower right abdomen, along with fever, nausea, and loss of appetite; it may require surgical removal (appendectomy) to prevent rupture.
