यह शब्द न्यू लैटिन aorta से आया है, जो यूनानी aortē (ἀορτή) से निकला है, जिसका अर्थ मुख्य धमनी है; इसका मूल संबंध ‘ऊपर उठाना/लटकाना’ अर्थ वाले यूनानी क्रिया-रूप से माना जाता है।
Definition
The aorta is the largest artery in the body. It begins at the left ventricle of the heart and distributes oxygenated blood through its branches to most tissues; in figurative use, it can mean the central, most important, or busiest route/part of a place or system.
एओर्टा (महाधमनी) शरीर की सबसे बड़ी धमनी है। यह हृदय के बाएँ निलय से निकलकर अपनी शाखाओं के माध्यम से ऑक्सीजन-युक्त रक्त को शरीर के अधिकांश हिस्सों तक पहुँचाती है; रूपक रूप में इसका अर्थ किसी स्थान/व्यवस्था का सबसे महत्वपूर्ण, केंद्रीय या सबसे व्यस्त हिस्सा/मार्ग भी हो सकता है।
