ant + lion से बना शब्द; चींटियों पर लार्वा के ‘शेर जैसा’ शिकारी व्यवहार होने के कारण यह नाम पड़ा; अंग्रेज़ी में इसका प्रयोग 17वीं शताब्दी से मिलता है।
Definition
An antlion is the larval stage of certain insects in the family Myrmeleontidae; the larva commonly makes a funnel-shaped sand pit and waits at the bottom to seize prey that slips in.
एंटलायन (antlion) मायरमेलियोन्टिडे (Myrmeleontidae) कुल के कुछ कीटों का लार्वा चरण है; इसका लार्वा अक्सर रेत में कीप/शंकु-आकार का गड्ढा बनाकर नीचे छिपकर बैठता है और फिसलकर अंदर आने वाली चींटियों व छोटे कीटों को पकड़ लेता है।
