From English angler (“one who fishes with a hook and line”) + fish; used for fishes that appear to ‘fish’ for prey with a lure; attested in modern English.

An anglerfish is a deep-sea (and some shallow-water) predatory fish known for a modified dorsal spine that acts like a fishing lure to attract prey close enough to be swallowed.
