यह शब्द 20वीं शताब्दी के मध्य में aero- (अर्थ: “वायु; विमान”) + space से बना और उड्डयन तथा अंतरिक्ष उड़ानों के विकास के साथ प्रचलित हुआ।

Aerospace refers to the combined domain of Earth’s atmosphere and outer space, and also to the science, engineering, and industry that design, build, and operate aircraft, rockets, satellites, and related systems.
एयरोस्पेस पृथ्वी के वायुमंडल और बाह्य अंतरिक्ष के संयुक्त क्षेत्र को संदर्भित करता है, तथा उस विज्ञान, अभियांत्रिकी और उद्योग को भी जो विमान, रॉकेट, उपग्रह और संबंधित प्रणालियों का डिजाइन, निर्माण और संचालन करता है।
