Origin & History
From the convention of labeling coordinate/machine axes with letters (X, Y, Z for linear; A, B, C for rotational) and, in crystallography, using a, b, c for lattice axes. “Axis” comes from Latin “axis” (‘axle’).

Definition
In engineering and machining, the A-axis usually denotes a rotary axis (often rotation about the X-axis) used to tilt or rotate a workpiece or tool; in crystallography/materials science, it may refer to the a-axis of a crystal lattice.
