From Middle English whiting, related to white, originally referring to the fish as “the little white one”; the powder sense comes from “white” in the sense of chalk/whitening.
মধ্য ইংরেজি whiting থেকে, যা white (সাদা) শব্দের সঙ্গে সম্পর্কিত; প্রথমে মাছটির নাম ছিল অর্থে “ছোট সাদা মাছ”। গুঁড়ো/চকজাত অর্থটি এসেছে ‘সাদা’ অর্থে চকের গুঁড়ো/হোয়াইটনিং বোঝানো থেকে।
Definition
Whiting most commonly means a small sea fish (especially in the cod family) that is eaten as food; it can also mean a fine white powder such as powdered chalk used for polishing, cleaning, or making putty/paint.
Whiting বলতে সাধারণত খাদ্য হিসেবে খাওয়া এক ধরনের ছোট সামুদ্রিক মাছ (বিশেষ করে কড গোত্রের) বোঝায়; আবার এটি গুঁড়ো সাদা পদার্থও বোঝাতে পারে—যেমন গুঁড়ো চক—যা পালিশ/পরিষ্কার কাজে বা পুটি/রঙ তৈরিতে ব্যবহৃত হয়।
