well এবং conditioned (condition ক্রিয়ার past participle) থেকে গঠিত; ১৭–১৮ শতক থেকে ‘উপযুক্ত অবস্থায় থাকা’ অর্থে ব্যবহৃত, পরে বিশেষভাবে শারীরিক ফিটনেস ও সঠিক রক্ষণাবেক্ষণের অর্থে প্রচলিত হয়।
