লাতিন “vīrus” থেকে উদ্ভূত, যার অর্থ ছিল “বিষ, আঠালো তরল”; আধুনিক জীববৈজ্ঞানিক অর্থ ১৯শ শতকের শেষভাগে বিকশিত হয়।
Definition
Viruses are tiny infectious agents made of genetic material (DNA or RNA) inside a protein coat; they can reproduce only by infecting living cells and may cause diseases in humans, animals, and plants.
ভাইরাস হলো অতি ক্ষুদ্র সংক্রামক কণা, যেগুলো জিনগত পদার্থ (ডিএনএ বা আরএনএ) ও একটি প্রোটিন আবরণ নিয়ে গঠিত; এগুলো কেবল জীবিত কোষে সংক্রমণ ঘটিয়ে বংশবৃদ্ধি করতে পারে এবং মানুষ, প্রাণী ও উদ্ভিদে রোগ সৃষ্টি করতে পারে।
