Origin & History

From Latin vertex (“turning point; whirl; top, summit”), related to vertere (“to turn”), later used in geometry for the meeting point of lines/edges.

Definition

A vertex is a topmost point (apex) or a corner point where two rays/lines meet to form an angle; in polygons and polyhedra it is where edges meet, in graphs it is a node, and in anatomy it can mean the crown/top of the skull.

‘Vertex’ বলতে কোনো কিছুর সর্বোচ্চ বিন্দু (চূড়া) অথবা এমন একটি কোণা-সদৃশ বিন্দু বোঝায় যেখানে দুটি রশ্মি/রেখা মিলিত হয়ে কোণ তৈরি করে; বহুভুজ/বহুপৃষ্ঠে এটি প্রান্তগুলোর মিলনবিন্দু, গ্রাফ তত্ত্বে এটি ‘নোড’, আর শারীরবিদ্যায় খুলির শীর্ষভাগও বোঝাতে পারে।
