Origin & History

Formed in Modern English from the prefix un- ('reverse/undo') + speak, modeled on 'unsay'; used to mean 'take back words' and also (rarely) 'make unspoken.'

To withdraw, retract, or deny words previously said, often because they were wrong, offensive, or damaging.
