Definition
Tunicata refers to a taxonomic group (subphylum) of mostly marine animals in the phylum Chordata. They are called tunicates because their bodies are covered by a protective outer layer (a “tunic”) made largely of tunicin; many are filter feeders such as sea squirts, and their larvae show chordate features like a notochord.
Tunicata বলতে কর্ডাটা (Chordata) পর্বের অন্তর্গত প্রধানত সামুদ্রিক প্রাণীদের একটি শ্রেণিবিন্যাসগত দল (সাবফাইলাম) বোঝায়। এদের দেহের বাইরে টিউনিসিন নামের পদার্থে গঠিত সুরক্ষামূলক আবরণ (tunic) থাকায় এদের টিউনিকেট বলা হয়; সি-স্কুইর্টের মতো অনেকেই ছাঁকনি-খাদক (filter feeder), এবং এদের লার্ভা পর্যায়ে নোটোকর্ডসহ কর্ডাটা-সুলভ বৈশিষ্ট্য দেখা যায়।
