From New Latin trachea (as in trachea arteria), ultimately from Greek trakheia (arteria) meaning “rough (artery),” referring to the rough, cartilaginous texture of the windpipe.

Definition
Tracheas are the main air-conducting tubes in the respiratory system, connecting the larynx (voice box) to the bronchi and helping move air to and from the lungs; they are supported by cartilage rings.
