From Middle English touchstone, from touch + stone; originally a stone used to test precious metals, later generalized to mean a standard or criterion.
মধ্য ইংরেজি touchstone থেকে এসেছে, touch + stone মিলিয়ে; শুরুতে মূল্যবান ধাতু (বিশেষত সোনা) পরীক্ষার পাথর বোঝাত, পরে সাধারণ অর্থে মানদণ্ড/পরীক্ষার معیار বোঝাতে ব্যবহৃত হয়।
Definition
Touchstones are stones used to test the purity/quality of gold or metal alloys by rubbing the metal on the stone and judging the streak; figuratively, touchstones are criteria or benchmarks used to evaluate or compare something.
টাচস্টোন হলো এমন এক ধরনের পাথর, যাতে সোনা বা ধাতব সংকর ঘষে দাগ/রেখা দেখে বিশুদ্ধতা বা গুণমান যাচাই করা হয়; রূপক অর্থে টাচস্টোন বলতে কোনো কিছুর মূল্যায়ন বা তুলনার জন্য ব্যবহৃত মানদণ্ড/বেঞ্চমার্ক বোঝায়।
