ফরাসি ‘Tonkin’ থেকে; এটি পর্তুগিজ/ইউরোপীয় রূপান্তরের মাধ্যমে ভিয়েতনামি ‘Đông Kinh’ (“পূর্ব রাজধানী”) শব্দ থেকে এসেছে—যা হ্যানয়ের সঙ্গে যুক্ত একটি পুরোনো নাম।
Definition
Tonkin is the traditional Western name for northern Vietnam, particularly the Red River Delta and the Hanoi area; in colonial history it referred to a French protectorate (late 19th–mid 20th century).
টনকিন হলো ভিয়েতনামের উত্তরাঞ্চলের একটি ঐতিহাসিক পশ্চিমা নাম—বিশেষ করে লাল নদীর বদ্বীপ ও হ্যানয় অঞ্চলের জন্য; উপনিবেশিক ইতিহাসে এটি (উনিশ শতকের শেষ ভাগ থেকে বিশ শতকের মাঝামাঝি) ফরাসি রক্ষিত অঞ্চল/প্রোটেক্টোরেটকেও বোঝাত।
