লাতিন titulus (‘লেখা/শিরোনাম’) থেকে উদ্ভূত; মধ্যযুগীয় লাতিনে ক্ষুদ্র চিহ্ন/দাগ বোঝাতে ব্যবহৃত হয়ে পরে ইংরেজিতে i বা j-এর ওপরের বিন্দু এবং রূপকে ‘অতি সামান্য পরিমাণ’ অর্থে বিশেষায়িত হয়।
