From Middle English “text”, from Old French “texte”, from Latin “textus” (‘woven, texture; text’), from “texere” (‘to weave’). The messaging sense developed in late 20th century with SMS (“text message”).

“Texts” most commonly means written material (the words of a book, document, or passage), and it can also mean SMS messages on phones; in computing it contrasts with binary data. As a verb form, “texts” means ‘sends a text message’ (e.g., ‘She texts me’).
