From the adjective tautologous (< tautology), ultimately from Greek tautología ‘repetition of the same thing’ (tautó ‘the same’ + -logia ‘speaking’).

Definition

Used to describe speech, writing, or reasoning that repeats the same idea in different words, adding no new information.
