From New Latin syphilis, from the title of a 1530 Latin poem by Girolamo Fracastoro in which a shepherd named Syphilus is afflicted with the disease.

Definition
Syphilis is a sexually transmitted infection caused by the bacterium Treponema pallidum; it can progress through stages and, if untreated, may cause serious long-term complications, but it is treatable (often with antibiotics such as penicillin).
