From Middle English via Old French, from Latin *superstitio* (“standing over; superstition”), related to *superstes* (“survivor; witness”), later associated with beliefs beyond proper religion or reason.
মধ্য ইংরেজি হয়ে পুরনো ফরাসি থেকে এসেছে; মূল লাতিন *superstitio* (আক্ষরিক অর্থে ‘উপরে দাঁড়িয়ে থাকা/অতিরিক্তভাবে টিকে থাকা’; পরে ‘কুসংস্কার’) থেকে উদ্ভূত, যা *superstes* (‘বেঁচে থাকা ব্যক্তি; সাক্ষী’) শব্দের সাথে সম্পর্কিত; পরবর্তীতে যুক্তি বা যথাযথ ধর্মীয় ব্যাখ্যার বাইরে থাকা বিশ্বাস বোঝাতে ব্যবহৃত হয়েছে।
Definition
A superstition is a belief that certain actions, objects, signs, or rituals can magically cause good luck or bad luck, even though there is no scientific or rational proof (e.g., believing a black cat brings bad luck). It can also (rarely) mean being overly strict or scrupulous about small details.
কুসংস্কার হলো এমন একটি বিশ্বাস—যেখানে মনে করা হয় কিছু কাজ, বস্তু, লক্ষণ বা আচার-অনুষ্ঠান কোনো বৈজ্ঞানিক বা যুক্তিসঙ্গত প্রমাণ ছাড়াই জাদু/অতিপ্রাকৃতভাবে ভালো বা খারাপ ফল ঘটায় (যেমন, কালো বিড়াল দেখলে দুর্ভাগ্য হবে বলে বিশ্বাস)। বিরল অর্থে, এটি তুচ্ছ বিষয়ে অতিরিক্ত খুঁতখুঁতানি বা অতিসূক্ষ্ম নীতিনিষ্ঠাকেও বোঝাতে পারে।
