Origin & History
From Arabic sunnī (سُنِّي) meaning “of the Sunnah,” from sunnah (سُنَّة) “custom, tradition; the Prophet’s practice.”
আরবি sunnī (سُنِّي) শব্দ থেকে এসেছে, যার অর্থ ‘সুন্নাহ-সম্পর্কিত’; এটি sunnah (سُنَّة) ‘রীতি/প্রথা; নবী মুহাম্মদের অনুসৃত পদ্ধতি বা কর্মধারা’ শব্দ থেকে উদ্ভূত।
Definition
Sunni refers to Muslims who follow Sunni Islam, which bases religious authority on the Qur'an and the Sunnah (the Prophet Muhammad’s teachings and practices), and generally accepts Abu Bakr, Umar, Uthman, and Ali as the first four “rightly guided” caliphs.
সুন্নি বলতে ইসলাম ধর্মের সুন্নি শাখার অনুসারীদের বোঝায়; এ শাখায় ধর্মীয় কর্তৃত্বের ভিত্তি হিসেবে কুরআন ও সুন্নাহ (নবী মুহাম্মদের শিক্ষা ও কর্মপদ্ধতি)কে গুরুত্ব দেওয়া হয়, এবং সাধারণভাবে আবু বকর, উমর, উসমান ও আলী—এই চারজনকে প্রথম চার ‘খুলাফায়ে রাশেদীন’ হিসেবে স্বীকৃতি দেওয়া হয়।
