Definition
A steroid is a lipid-like organic compound with a characteristic four-ring structure (17 carbon atoms). In biology, steroids include natural substances such as cholesterol (a sterol), bile acids, and adrenal/sex hormones; in medicine and sports, the word often refers to anabolic-androgenic steroids used to increase muscle mass, and more broadly to performance-enhancing steroid drugs.
