From Middle English stepmoder, from Old English stēopmōdor, where stēop- meant “bereaved/orphaned” and mōdor meant “mother”; later generalized to mean a parent’s new spouse.

Definition
A stepmother is the wife of a person’s father (or, less commonly, mother’s spouse in a same-sex marriage) who is not the person’s biological mother; she becomes part of the family through marriage, not birth.
