Origin & History
From spittle (“saliva”) + bug; named for the saliva-like froth produced by the insect’s nymphs (recorded in English from the 19th–20th century).
ইংরেজি spittle (অর্থ ‘থুতু/লালা’) + bug (অর্থ ‘পোকা’) থেকে গঠিত; পোকাটির নিম্ফ যে থুতুর মতো ফেনা তৈরি করে, সেই বৈশিষ্ট্যের ভিত্তিতে নামকরণ (১৯–২০শ শতক থেকে ইংরেজিতে প্রচলিত)।
Definition
A spittlebug is the common name for the nymph stage of certain froghoppers (family Aphrophoridae) that suck plant sap and surround themselves with a foamy secretion; the foam helps prevent drying out and deters predators.
স্পিটলবাগ হলো কিছু ফ্রগহপার (অ্যাফ্রোফোরিডি পরিবার) পোকামাকড়ের নিম্ফ পর্যায়ের প্রচলিত নাম; তারা উদ্ভিদের রস শোষণ করে এবং নিজেদের চারপাশে ফেনাযুক্ত নিঃসরণে ‘থুতুর মতো’ ফেনা তৈরি করে, যা শুকিয়ে যাওয়া রোধ করে ও শিকারি থেকে কিছুটা সুরক্ষা দেয়।
