মধ্য ইংরেজি spillen থেকে, যা প্রাচীন ইংরেজি spillan (“নষ্ট করা, অপচয় করা, ধ্বংস করা”) থেকে এসেছে; ‘অপচয়/হারিয়ে ফেলা’ ধারণা থেকে পরে ‘দুর্ঘটনাবশত ঢলে পড়া/ছড়িয়ে পড়া’ এবং রূপক অর্থে ‘তথ্য ফাঁস করা/বলে ফেলা’ অর্থ গড়ে ওঠে।

“Spills” can mean (1) plural messes made when liquid/food etc. is accidentally dropped or poured out, (2) plural falls/stumbles (informal), and (3) the verb form meaning ‘spills’ = ‘pours/drops accidentally’ or ‘reveals’ (information).
“Spills” বলতে (১) দুর্ঘটনাবশত তরল/খাবার ইত্যাদি পড়ে বা ঢেলে পড়ে যে নোংরা/ছড়িয়ে পড়া অবস্থা—তার বহুবচন, (২) পড়ে যাওয়া/হোঁচট খাওয়া (অনানুষ্ঠানিক) —এর বহুবচন, এবং (৩) ক্রিয়ার রূপ হিসেবে ‘সে/এটা ঢেলে ফেলে/ছড়িয়ে ফেলে’ বা ‘তথ্য ফাঁস করে/বলে ফেলে’ বোঝায়।
