From Latin sphinx, from Greek Sphígx (Σφίγξ), the name of the mythic creature; the plural “sphinxes” follows the standard English plural -es. The moth sense comes from the same term used in scientific naming.
লাতিন sphinx থেকে, যা গ্রিক Sphígx (Σφίγξ)—পুরাণের সেই প্রাণীর নাম—থেকে এসেছে; ইংরেজিতে সাধারণ বহুবচন -es যোগ হয়ে “sphinxes” হয়েছে। মথ/প্রজাপতির অর্থটি একই শব্দের বৈজ্ঞানিক নামকরণে ব্যবহারের মাধ্যমে এসেছে।

Sphinxes are the plural form of sphinx: (1) in myth and ancient art, a creature usually shown with a human head and a lion’s body, often linked with riddles and guardianship (notably in Greek stories and in Egyptian monuments); (2) in biology, “sphinx” can also refer to certain large moths (hawk moths).
Sphinxes হলো sphinx শব্দের বহুবচন: (১) পুরাণ ও প্রাচীন শিল্পকলায় মানুষের মাথা ও সিংহের দেহবিশিষ্ট এক প্রাণী, যা ধাঁধা ও প্রহরীর ভাবনার সঙ্গে যুক্ত (বিশেষ করে গ্রিক কাহিনি এবং মিশরীয় স্থাপত্য/মূর্তিতে); (২) জীববিজ্ঞানে “sphinx” বলতে কিছু বড় আকারের প্রজাপতি/মথ (হক মথ)কেও বোঝায়।
