From Late Latin sphincter, from Greek sphinktḗr “band, that which binds tight,” from sphíngō “to bind tight, squeeze.”

Definition
A sphincter is a circular (ring-shaped) muscle that tightens or relaxes to control the flow of substances through a tube or an opening in the body (for example, controlling the passage of food, urine, or feces).
