From German Sphalerit, from Greek sphaleros meaning “treacherous/deceptive,” referring to its resemblance to galena yet yielding little lead.
জার্মান ‘Sphalerit’ থেকে; গ্রিক ‘sphaleros’ (অর্থ ‘প্রতারক/ছলনাময়’) থেকে উদ্ভূত—কারণ এটি দেখতে গ্যালেনার মতো হলেও সীসা খুব কম বা নেই, তাই খনিশ্রমিকদের কাছে ‘ধোঁকাবাজ’ আকরিক হিসেবে পরিচিত ছিল।
Definition
Sphalerite is a mineral composed mainly of zinc sulfide (ZnS). It commonly occurs in hydrothermal veins and sedimentary deposits, often with galena and pyrite, and is the principal source ore from which zinc is extracted.
