From the literal slap stick: a two-piece hinged device used in theater to create a loud slap sound; the term later broadened to mean the physical-comedy style associated with such effects (attested from the 17th–18th centuries).
আক্ষরিক ‘স্ল্যাপ স্টিক’ থেকে: নাট্যশালায় জোরে চাপড়ের শব্দ তৈরির জন্য ব্যবহৃত দুই-খণ্ড কব্জাযুক্ত যন্ত্র; পরে এই ধরনের শব্দ-প্রভাবের সাথে যুক্ত অতিরঞ্জিত শারীরিক কমেডি ধারাকেও বোঝাতে শব্দটির অর্থ প্রসারিত হয় (প্রায় ১৭–১৮ শতক থেকে ব্যবহৃত)।

স্ল্যাপস্টিক হলো এমন এক ধরনের কৌতুক যা অতিরঞ্জিত শারীরিক কাণ্ডকারখানা—পড়ে যাওয়া, ধাক্কা লাগা, হাস্যকর দুর্ঘটনা—ইত্যাদির ওপর নির্ভর করে; এতে প্রায়ই বোকাসোকা চরিত্র ও ক্ষতিহীন অপমানজনক পরিস্থিতি থাকে। শব্দটি দুইটি কাঁটার মতো লাঠি-জোড়া (ক্ল্যাপার) বোঝাতেও ব্যবহৃত হয়, যা জোরে ‘চাপড়’ শব্দ তৈরির জন্য ব্যবহৃত হয়।
