From Latin siren (plural sirenes), from Greek Seirēn ‘Siren’, a mythological creature who lured sailors with song; the modern sense ‘warning device’ developed later from the idea of a loud, attention-grabbing sound.
লাতিন siren (বহুবচন sirenes) থেকে, যা গ্রিক Seirēn ‘সাইরেন’ (পুরাণের প্রলোভনকারী প্রাণী) থেকে এসেছে; পরে ‘সতর্কীকরণ যন্ত্র’ অর্থটি গড়ে ওঠে জোরালো মনোযোগ-আকর্ষণকারী শব্দের ধারণা থেকে।
Definition
A siren is (1) a device such as on an ambulance, police car, factory, or alarm system that produces a loud rising-and-falling sound to warn or signal danger; and (2) in Greek mythology, a creature (later often imagined as a mermaid-like figure) whose beautiful singing tempted sailors and led them to destruction; by extension, it can mean an irresistibly attractive but potentially dangerous person or temptation.
Siren বলতে (১) অ্যাম্বুলেন্স, পুলিশের গাড়ি, কারখানা বা অ্যালার্ম ব্যবস্থার মতো সতর্কীকরণ যন্ত্রকে বোঝায়, যা বিপদের সংকেত দিতে জোরে ওঠানামা-ধর্মী শব্দ করে; এবং (২) গ্রিক পুরাণে এমন এক প্রাণীকে বোঝায় (পরে অনেক সময় জলপরী/মারমেইড সদৃশ কল্পিত), যার মোহময় গান নাবিকদের প্রলুব্ধ করে সর্বনাশে ডেকে আনত; সম্প্রসারিত অর্থে, এটি এমন আকর্ষণীয় কিন্তু সম্ভাব্য বিপজ্জনক ব্যক্তি বা প্রলোভনকেও বোঝাতে পারে।
